Mental Health & Wellbeing
At NZOHA, we understand that the daily demands of oral health practice can be intense. Balancing patient care, professional responsibilities, and personal life can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why prioritising your mental health and wellbeing is just as important as maintaining your clinical skills.
We want our members to know it’s okay to ask for help. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness. There are a range of confidential and professional services available to support you if you’re feeling stressed, burnt out, anxious, or simply in need of someone to talk to.
Signs of burnout to watch for:
Feeling exhausted or constantly tired, even after rest
Reduced motivation or loss of interest in work you normally enjoy
Feeling irritable, impatient, or detached from colleagues and patients
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
Increased anxiety or feelings of being overwhelmed
Physical symptoms such as headaches, sleep disturbances, or changes in appetite
Practical steps you can take to protect your wellbeing:
Schedule regular breaks and make time for activities you enjoy
Connect with colleagues — sharing experiences and challenges can help reduce stress
Set boundaries between work and personal life
Seek professional support early if you notice signs of stress or burnout
If you or someone you know needs help, don’t hesitate to connect with the appropriate services:
Your GP or a trusted counsellor
National helplines like 1737 – Need to Talk?, available 24/7 by phone or text
More resources are available at Health NZ: Where to Get Help
By looking after yourself, you not only protect your own wellbeing but also ensure you can continue providing the best possible care to your patients. Together, we can build a professional community that supports and values mental health every day.
