What cover is available to you?

Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance for oral health practitioners
You may face situations where your patients look to hold you responsible for injuries they believe are due to your professional services. This is where Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance can step in.

Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance protects you against allegations or claims of financial loss due to injury or damages that have resulted from a negligent act, error, omission, malpractice or breach of duty that has arisen out of your professional duty. PI helps to ensure that your legal defence is coordinated and paid for if a claim is made against you. Your PI also covers the cost of patient compensation or damages.

  • $10M Professional Indemnity insurance cover per claim

  • Retroactive cover

  • Worldwide cover (excluding USA)

  • Optional Public & Products Liability Insurance via BMS

It’s important to note that this cover is provided on a “claims made” basis, which means you must have coverage at the time a claim is made against you, regardless of when the “incident” took place. Therefore, you must maintain continuity of professional indemnity cover by renewing your policy annually to ensure you remain protected.

Optional extension for Botox (botulinum toxin) or dermal filler

If you provide (or are considering providing) Botox and/or dermal filler services to patients, you may wish to extend your cover to include this.

If you are part of the NZOHA Member insurance program, cover can be provided at an additional cost for the application of Botox and/or dermal filler. 

You must be adequately trained in cosmetic injectables to undertake these activities. Products must be used in line with manufacturer’s instructions. Platysmal bands Botox treatment is excluded from the cover.

Additional cover

If you currently hold Professional Indemnity insurance with BMS, additional cover is available to you. This includes Entity Insurance.

Entity Insurance for oral health practitioners

It’s possible for your business to be named in a complaint involving your business or an employee at any point in time. In this type of situation, entity insurance could help.

Entity insurance is professional indemnity and public liability insurance for your business. In the event your business is named in a complaint, this type of cover could step in. 

Entity cover is useful if:

  • you’re a Sole Trader or have a business name but no employees; or

  • if you have a business that employs staff, contractors and/or casual workers.

How do I get cover?

As long as you hold a current NZOHA membership you can get cover with BMS. To set up a Professional Indemnity Insurance policy, simply log in to your NZOHA member portal, navigate to the Member Insurance Program and apply for cover using the dedicated NZOHA BMS link.
